ELIZABETH,

RELICT OF THE LATE H. W. MORTIMER, ESQ.

OF RIVER TERRACE, ISLINGTON;

WHO, FOR UPWARDS OF HALF A CENTURY, HAS,

THROUGH DIVINE GRACE,

BEEN ENABLED TO MAINTAIN AND ADORN

HER CHRISTIAN PROFESSION,

THIS LITTLE VOLUME,

WITH EVERY SENTIMENT OF DUTIFUL REGARD,
AND FILIAL RESPECT,

IS

INSCRIBED, AND DEDICATED,

BY HER AFFECTIONATE SON,

THE AUTHOR.

PREFACE.

THAT man is a creature of circumstances, is readily admitted; and, more or less, painfully felt by us all. From a note at the foot of page 20, it will be seen that it was the author's intention to have inserted a sermon on the painful subject of the Slave Trade. That discourse was designed to have concluded the volume. An unexpected occurrence, however, induced him to deviate from his arranged plan. The decease of a young man in one of his congregations, at an interesting age, and when just entering upon the active duties. of life, called forth the tenth sermon, which, by the advice, and at the request of some judicious friends, was inserted in its stead.

The author is not insensible to the defects which may be found in the present volume. Yet he does not hesitate to declare, that he has given to its preparation, all the time he could properly spare from other, and equally important, duties. Nor can he venture to send it forth into the world, without soliciting the prayers of his congregations and friends, that, notwithstanding every imperfection, it may be rendered efficient, through the accompanying grace and blessing of the Saviour, to the enlightening of some ignorant mind, or to the comfort of some sorrowful heart ; especially among those, for whose spiritual welfare he cannot but feel the most earnest solicitude, viz. the young persons who statedly attend upon his ministry.

Islington, April 10, 1826.
