New York university plans to open a separate school for the training of teachers of salesmanship. The object of the training is to dignify the work of selling and buying, and to secure educated persons to work in stores. The Retail dry goods associations is fostering the scheme and the funds for the training of the teachers will be raised among sixteen large retailers. The course will be given thru theory and practice, the students spending their mornings at the university and their afternoons at a store. Constitutional amendments, 1918 Florida-State voted for the constitutional amendment providing for compulsory school attendance, at the election on Nov. 5, 1918.

Governors' messages, 1919 Iowa-Gov. Harding recommends making school attendance compulsory. New Mexico-Gov. Larrazolo recommends that the minimum age for compulsory education be raised from fourteen to fifteen years.

North Carolina-Gov. Biekett insists that every child between the ages of eight and fourteen shall have the benefit of a sixmonths school.

South Carolina-Gov. Manning states that the local option compulsory school attendance law has been found practicable and that there is a strong demand in the state now for a state-wide compulsory law.

Governors' messages, 1919 California-Gov. Stephens recommends legislation which will give the schools support based upon an average daily attendance. Connecticut-Gov. Holcomb recommends increased financial support for education.

Maine-Gov. Milliken recommends that a general appropriation be made for the purpose of supplementing state aid to secondary schools in case of special need and that the state superintendent of public schools be authorized to administer this fund Nevada-Gov. Boyle thinks the state should levy and collect the major portion of the taxes required to support the secondary schools.

New

Mexico-Gov. Larrazolo recommends that the tax levy of one-half mill for the state current school fund be amended by authorizing a levy of one and one-half mills on the dollar for the school fund. Ohio-Gov. Cox states that the Cleveland board of education faces a deficit of approximately $1,000,000 at the end of the calendar year of 1919.

Pennsylvania-Gov. Brumbaugh states that an intelligent citizenry is the hope of the nation and recommends that Pennsylvania provide $25,000,000 for the new and larger service the schools must perform. Pennsylvania-Gov. Sproul recommends an increased appropriation for the betterment of the school system.

South Carolina-Gov. Manning states that the school appropriation for education during 1918 was more than double the appropriation for 1914. Texas-Gov. Hobby recommends taxation of mineral wealth to build up the common school districts.

Texas-Gov. Hobby recommends the appropriation of one million dollars for the current year to maintain the $7.50 per capita tax for schools.
