California-In a number of cities merchants have established cooperative delivery systems. Under the common plan the city is divided into districts, one delivery wagon covering the territory in a single district. All goods are sent to a central station, thence to various district headquarters and from there to purchasers. Deliveries are made on regular schedule, only a specified number a day. Special deliveries are not allowed. The cost per delivery varies from 5c in cities of from 1,000 to 3,000 population to 12c and 15c in cities of from 20,000 to 40,000 population. Cities in which the cooperative system is in effect are Stockton, Santa Rosa, Watsonville, Redwood City, Whittier, Palo Alto, San José and Sacramento.
