Whit Sunday.

THE COLLECT.

GOD, who as at this time didst teach the hearts of thy faithful people, by the sending to them the light of thy Holy Spirit, grant us by the same Spirit to have a right judgment in all things, and ever more to rejoice in his holy comfort, through the merits of Christ Jesus our Saviour, who liveth and reigneth with Thee, in the unity of the same Spirit, one God, world without end. Amen.

Glory be to God on high, and in earth peace, good-will towards men. We praise thee, we bless thee, we worship thee, we glorify thee; we give thanks to thee for thy great glory, O Lord God, heavenly King, God the Father Almighty.

O Lord, the only begotten Son Jesus Christ; O Lord God, Lamb of God, Son of the Father, that takest away the sins of the world, have mercy upon us; thou that takest away the sins of the world, have mercy upon us: thou that

takest away the sins of the world, receive our prayer: thou that sittest at the right hand of God the Father, have mercy upon us.

For thou only art holy; thou only art the Lord; thou only, O Christ, with the Holy Ghost, art most high in the glory of God the Father. Amen.

ARTICLE IX.

Of Original, or Birth-sin.

ORIGINAL sin is the fault and corruption of the nature of every man, that naturally is engendered of the offspring of Adam; whereby man is very far gone from original righteousness, and is of his own nature inclined to evil, so that the flesh lusteth always contrary to the Spirit; and therefore in every person born into this world, it deserveth God's wrath and damnation.

Rom. v. 14. Death reigned from Adam to Moses, even over them that had not sinned after the similitude of Adam's transgression.

Job xxv. 4. How can he be clean that is born of a woman?-Job xiv. 4. Who can bring

a clean thing out of an unclean? Not one.Ps. li. 5. Behold I was shapen in wickedness, and in sin did my mother conceive me. -Rom. v. 12, 15, 17—19; 1 Cor. xv. 22; John iii. 6. That which is born of the flesh is flesh. Rom. vii. 18. I know that in me, that is in my flesh, dwelleth no good thing.

Gen. v. 3; Gen. vi. 5. God saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually.-Gen. viii. 21. The imagination of man's heart is evil from his youth. Jer. xvii. 9. The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked; who can know it?-Matt. xv. 18, 19; Ps. xiv. 2, 3; Rom. iii. 10. There is none righteous, no not

one.

[ocr errors]

Gal. v. 17. The flesh lusteth against the spirit, and the spirit against the flesh; and these are contrary one to the other; so that ye cannot do the things that ye would.

Rom. vi. 23. The wages of sin is death.Eph. ii. 3. We were by nature the children

of wrath.-Rom. iii. 19.

ARTICLE X.

Of Free Will.

THE Condition of man after the fall of Adam, is such, that he cannot turn and prepare himself, by his own natural strength and good works to faith and calling upon God; wherefore, we have no power to do good works pleasant and acceptable to God, without the grace of God by Christ preventing us, that we may have a good will, and working with us when we have that good will.

Rom. viii. 8. They that are in the flesh cannot please God.~2 Cor. iii. 5. We are not sufficient of ourselves to think any thing as of ourselves, but our sufficiency is of God.-John xv.5. Without me ye can do nothing. Rom. v. 6.

Eph. ii. 1. You hath he quickened who were dead in trespasses and sins.-John vi. 44. No man can come unto me, except the Father which hath sent me draw him.-Cant. i. 4. Draw me, we will run after thee.-Phil. ii. 13. It is God which worketh in you both to will and to do, of his own good pleasure.

The fourth Sunday after the Epiphany.

THE COLLECT.

O GOD, who knowest us to be set in the midst of so many and great dangers, that by reason of the frailty of our nature we cannot always stand upright; grant to us such strength and protection, as may support us in all dangers, and carry us through all temptations, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

The second Sunday in Lent.

THE COLLECT.

Almighty God, who seest that we have no power of ourselves to help ourselves, keep us both outwardly in our bodies, and inwardly in our souls, that we may be defended from all adversities which may happen to the body, and from all evil thoughts which may assault and hurt the soul, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Easter Sunday.

THE COLLECT.

Almighty God, who through thine only begotten Son Jesus Christ hast overcome death,
