30. NATHAN BEN SADDI, CHRONICLE, 1744.

The Chronicle of the Kings of England. Written in the manner of the ancient Jewish historians. By Nathan Ben Saddi, a Priest of the Jews. London, printed. Newport: reprinted by the Widow Franklin, 1744.

Collation: 16°, pp. 56.

First American edition, from the first London edition, 1740, 1. Lord Chesterfield is usually credited with the authorship of this Chronicle the fore-runner of many sham chronicles in mock biblical style-though Nathan Ben Saddi was said to be the pseudonym of Robert Dodsley, and the Chronicle is reprinted in his collected Trifles.

Numerous editions were printed in this country, not listed in this Bibliography as not being genuine Judaica. The edition of Litchfield, 1791, is of peculiar interest as being attributed on the title-page to "the late Dr. Franklin." The reproduction given is of the title-page of the edition of 1773.
