The "Bay Psalm Book" was the first book to be published
in the English settlements in America. It was translated
directly from the Hebrew text. The preface (by Richard
Mather) contains the first dissertation on Hebrew poetry and
language to be published in America. Hebrew type is used
for the first time on the western continent. See the preface,
sig. (three words in Hebrew); *** (a Hebrew letter) and the
verso of the same leaf (two Hebrew words); also the 119th
Psalm where the entire Hebrew Alphabet is given. As there
was no font of Hebrew type in America at that time the
Hebrew characters were specially cut for the book.

As there are only ten copies known of the original edition (as above) students are advised to consult the Facsimile Reprint issued by the New England Society, which contains an excellent introduction by Dr. Wilberforce Eames.
