delusion of its being a real lake being thus rendered most completely deceptive. He had often seen the mirage in Syria and Egypt, and always found it of a whitish colour in those countries, like morning mist, seldom seen lying steadily on the plain, almost always vibrating, but in the case referred to above, differed and bore the most complete resemblance to water-a resemblance attributed by the traveller to the great aridity of air and earth in the desert where he beheld it, while the appearance of water apparently approached much more nearly than in Syria and Egypt, often approaching within 200 paces of the beholders, whereas before he had never seen it approach nearer than within half a mile.
