The REVELATION of ST. JOHN the Divine.

THE testimony of the early fathers, Justin Martyr, Irenæus, and Tertullian, is very explicit in favour of the authenticity of this book, and confirmatory of what is declared in it (ch. i., 9), that John saw these visions in the isle of Patmos, whither he had been banished by order of Domitian about the year 96. And Sir Isaac Newton says, "I do not find. . . . any other book of the New Testament so strongly attested as this." We may conjecture that St. John was favoured with these visions towards the close of his exile, and that they were published by him at Ephesus soon after his return.

The object of the book was to exhibit a history of the church of Christ in the world from the commencement of the conflict to the final victory, and to serve, like the predictions of the Old Testament prophets, to animate and encourage the drooping spirits of the first Christians. This we infer from what is said (ch. i., 1), “To shew unto his servants things which must shortly come to pass ;" but it does not follow that all the predictions were to take place in the first ages of the church, but rather that they were shortly to begin to come to pass, and were to go on fulfilling to the end of time.

But it was also written for the church universal; and living, as we do, amidst the fulfilling of some of the events predicted, the consoling view of Christ, as the Head of his church, finally overcoming all his and our enemies, is equally presented to us as it was to the suffering Christians of any time.

We have endeavoured to divide the contents of the book according to the different visions, and have given such explanations of their meaning as have obtained the consent of the best interpreters.

The text of this book is in an unsatisfactory state: the critical student will do well to possess himself of Tregelles's Greek and English edition of it.

9I John, who also am your brother, and companion in tribulation, and in the kingdom and patience of Jesus Christ, was in the isle that is called Patmos, for the word of God, and for the testimony of Jesus Christ. 10 I was in the Spirit' on the Lord's day, and heard behind me a great voice, as of a trumpet, 11 saying, "I" am Alpha and Omega, the first and the last;"m and, "What thou seest, write in a book, and send it unto the seven churches which are in Asia; unto Ephesus, and unto Smyrna, and unto Pergamos, and unto Thyatira, ed with fine gold and unto Sardis, and unto Philadelphia, and unto Laodicea." 12 And I turned to see" the voice that spake and his face as with me.
