The Second Epistle of PAUL the Apostle to TIMOTHY. (Acts 25, 31)

INTERNAL evidence as well as ancient testimony is entirely in favour of this second epistle having the same author as the first; the names and circumstances referred to in it rendering it absolutely certain that it was no other than St. Paul.

It was written, however, under totally different circumstances from the first. The weight of evidence is in favour of the opinion, that it was written by the apostle towards the close of his laborious life, and in prison at Rome under severe restraint. It is probable that after his liberation from the first imprisonment, St. Paul accomplished some of the visits he purposed when he wrote the four epistles from that city; but of these we have no certain account, and we may with good reason conclude, that this was the last epistle Paul wrote.

The persecution of the Christians by Nero had scattered from the apostle the little band of Christians, so that Onesiphorus had some difficulty in finding him. Luke alone was with him.

In this letter Paul informs Timothy of his own trying circumstances, further instructs him in his work, and utters his dying testimony against the growing corruptions of the truth.
