PREFACE. THE question may, with great propriety, be asked, "Why publish another book on a subject which has been ably and thoroughly discussed by so many authors, as the Evidences of Christianity?" Perhaps the author will not be able to give a satisfactory answer to this question. An eminent divine says, "The multitude of old books affords no argument against the publication of new ones; since new ones will be read when old ones are neglected, and almost all mankind are in this respect Athenians." To this it may be added, that, though there are a great many good books, there are more bad ones than good; therefore, as bad ones are constantly multiplying, so should the good ones. And though this book may not be so good as others heretofore published, yet I have reason to think it will be read, because the Christian public have always heretofore favored me with their attention when I have asked it.
