SUMMARY OF WAGES PAID BY FOURTEEN PRINCIPAL RAILWAY COMPANIES DURING THE YEARS 1899-1908.

Railway.

The above is taken from Appendix XVII. of the Minutes of Evidence taken before the Departmental Committee appointed
by the Board of Trade to consider the law relating to Railway Agreements and Amalgamations, page 860. Handed in by
Mr. G. J. Wardle, M.P.

It will be noted that a decrease is shown in the case of the London and South Western Railway, not an increase. The average decrease for the whole fourteen railways amounts to nearly one penny-halfpenny in the pound of gross receipts.-R. H.

APPENDIX XI

Letter from MR. W. R. COOPER TO MR. A. W. GATTIE.

"THE ELECTRICIAN,'

1, 2 & 3, SALisbury Court, FLEET STREET, E.C. JULY 5, 1916.

A. W. GATTIE, ESQ.,

II, MONTAGUE GARDENS,
BIRCH GROVE,

ACTON, W.

DEAR MR. GATTIE,

In reply to your enquiry, there has been an enormous decrease in the cost of printing in recent years, owing chiefly to the use of type-setting machines. Apart from this there has been a decrease in the cost of machining, and the cost of paper has also fallen. Notwithstanding the increased cost of labour, I think that, due to the above causes, the average cost of printing has probably come down something like 50 per cent. during the past half-century. I refer, of course, to prewar prices.

Yours truly,

W. R. COOPER,

Editor.
