through Jesus; and that as we draw from those promises which are the pledges of God's action, the pledges that He will act in our behalf-as we draw from those promises, God is glorified. In the 23rd of Numbers, after speaking about the backsliding of the children of Israel, it was said, "Neither is there iniquity seen in them," because of the covenant; and that the shout of a king was among them: and then it was said, "According to this time it shall be said of Jacob and Israel, What hath God wrought?" In other words our life is to be a manifestation of Divine power. God comes in on the very ground of the ruin of the flesh, on the very ground that where the babes and sucklings are, there He ordains strength, for the glory of His own name. And so when the Apostle was writing to the Ephesians, his prayer was that they might see what glory God had in His inheritance in the saints: that is, that God's purpose was to show out Himself in the saints; and that when He calls us to serve, it is merely that in those opportunities of service there is to be a manifestation of God Himself, and His own power.

And now, therefore, let me ask you, beloved brethren and sisters in Christ, and I would ask myself, if I believe this as a reality. Do you believe that as He is, so are we in this world? Is it a reality that we have been separated unto God? Is it a reality with us to-night, that now we are not of the world, and that God stablisheth us-is at this moment stablishing us in Christ-in the anointed One, in the sanctified One, and that He is anointing us in Him? May our

gracious, loving Father enable us to believe His word, and as we see what it is to be in Christ Jesus, we shall say, as a matter of experience, "I can do all things through Christ who strengtheneth me." The eternal covenant remains the same, God has not withdrawn the Holy Spirit from us. Failing as we have been, unthankful as we have been, He nevertheless says, "My Spirit remaineth among you." Be strong, all ye

people of the Lord: Jesus is the Head of His Church, and has triumphed for us. "In all these things we are more than conquerors, through Him that loveth us." The meeting closed with the Doxology-"Glory, honour."

hursday, October 28th.

Subject "THE SAME HOLY GHOST ANOINTING THE CHURCH FOR MINISTRY."

MORNING.

The Conference having re-assembled at 11 o'clock, the meeting was begun by silent prayer, and the singing of a part of the 4th Special Hymn :

"Holy, holy, holy, is the Lord of hosts."-ISAIAH vi. 3.

"O Holy, Holy Father!

O Christ! ascended high;

O pure celestial Spirit!

Eternal Trinity!

We, with Thy countless seraphs,

We with Thy saints in light,

Bow down with adoration,

And praise Thee day and night.

One life pervades Thy ransomed
Within the golden gate,

And those who still are pilgrims,
And for their glory wait.
The shouts of triumph yonder,
The plaintive songs of earth,
Flow from the Spirit's presence;
Both own a heav'nly birth.

The precious blood of Jesus
Is now within the veil;
Yonder Thy saints behold it,
We too by it prevail !
Upon each shining forehead
I read the Saviour's name,
While we, now pressing forward,
Bear on our brows the same!"

After Mr. PENNEFATHER had offered prayer, closing with the Lord's Prayer, in which the large assembly joined as with one voice, the remainder of the hymn was then sung :

"O wondrous living union!

The saints are one with Thee,
Thou fountain of their being,
Mysterious Trinity!

No power on earth,—nor Satan,
Can separate Christ's sheep,
For which He gave the ransom,
And which He's pledged to keep!

Then teach us, Lord, to worship
With loving hearts to-day,
And while we sing Thy praises,

And learn in faith to pray,

Help us to feel our union

With all who know Thy name,

And glory in Jehovah,

Unchangeably the same!"

Mr. PENNEFATHER then read the last five verses of

Proverbs viii. :—

"Now therefore hearken unto Me, O ye children: for blessed are they that keep my ways.

"Hear instruction, and be wise, and refuse it not. "Blessed is the man that heareth Me, watching daily at My gates, waiting at the posts of my doors.

"For whoso findeth Me findeth life, and shall obtain favour of the Lord."

* Beloved Christian Friends,-Observe the force of the therefore in this 32nd verse "Now therefore hearken unto Me, O ye children." We are carried back by this word to the magnificent description which we have of Jesus' glory in the preceding verses :

"I was set up from everlasting, from the beginning, or ever the world was.

and

"When there were no depths, I was brought forth. "When He prepared the heavens, I was there. "When He appointed the foundations of the earth, then I was by Him, as one brought up with Him my delights were with the sons of men. "Now therefore hearken unto Me." As if He would say to us, by the glory who was both God and Man, to be heeded? Wilt thou not hearken unto Me?"

description of His "Am I not worthy

*These remarks were not reported, but were supplied by a hearer from memory.-ED.

Oh that we had the power of faith to grasp His glory, as He has revealed it to us in His Word!

Then we should be found in the attitude of those mentioned in the 34th verse-" Blessed is the man that heareth Me, watching daily at my gates, waiting at the posts of My doors." Some of my friends beside me, who have been in India, can explain better than I can how Eastern is the whole imagery used here. In Indian palaces, all the messengers of the household sit at their master's gate, waiting for the word of command, and then each messenger in turn goes as a flash of lightning to perform it.

Before we can do the simplest work for God, beloved friends, we are to wait to hear His voice. How often we listen to others, to what men say, rather than to the voice of Jesus! "My sheep hear My voice and a stranger will they not follow, but will flee from him, because they know not the voice of strangers."

Shall we not now ask that we may be so immediately brought into the presence of God, that we may hear His voice speaking to us, though it be through human lips. "Blessed is the man that heareth Me." Should we not ever cry, as Samuel was taught to do by Eli, and say, "Speak, Lord, and let thy servant hearken ?"

It is said of the mighty Gabriel that he "stands in the presence of God," to wait and listen for the word of Jehovah; and then "he flies swiftly," to execute the commands of the King of kings.

And yet even the feeblest of the sons of Adam, that
