EUROPEAN WAR

COMPILED UNDER THE DIRECTION OF

PREFATORY NOTE

The purpose of this list is to indicate the material on the European war to be found in the Library of Congress. Besides books and pamphlets, it includes periodicals and newspapers, broadsides, posters, prints, photographs, and music. Maps have been omitted, because a special list of the maps is in press.

The material included relates strictly to the war. The absence of certain items, relating only indirectly to the war, but which have been included in a number of printed classified lists, will probably be noted. In a classified list the reasons for the inclusion of such items are made evident by the classification. In a check list arranged alphabetically by authors such items must necessarily be excluded, or there would be no limit to the size of the list.

Publications which have appeared as a series have been kept together alphabetically arranged under the name of the series. Where the series publication was not evident, the item may have been entered under the author, and such publications should be looked for in both places.

Prints, posters, and similar material with indefinite or no titles have been broadly classified by subjects arranged alphabetically. Music has been subdivided by country.

The titles of broadsides and poster broadsides were furnished by the Manuscripts Division; of picture posters, prints, and photographs, by the Prints Division; of periodicals and newspapers, by the Periodical Division; of music, by the Music Division. The material is coming into the Library so rapidly that it seemed desirable to include items for which definite orders have been placed. These titles have been supplied by the Order Division and are generally starred.

The addition of the call numbers makes it possible to use this compilation as a finding list as well.
