Repentance, they then forgave them in 2 Cor. the Perfon of Chrift, and fo received them ii. 10. to full Communion: That they alfo remitted Sins by the Administration of the other Sacrament, or the Holy Eucharift, which we find the Apoftler frequently adminiftred, and thereby remitted the Sins of fuch good Chriftians, as faithfully received the fame at their Hands. For, by Adminiftring that Sacrament, they gave to every faithful Receivert the Blood of the Matt. New Teftament, which was fhed for many, for the Remiffion of Sins. This is the whole Doctrine of Sacerdotal Abfolution, as it has been taught by me, as any one may be convinced, that will read my Sermon, and my Answer to Dr. Cannon: Though it has been fcandaloufly misreprefented by many that never read thofe Difcourfes. And now, is not that Sacerdotal Abfolution, or Remiffion of Sins, which is granted to Sinners, in the Miniftry of the Holy

Sacraments, generally neceffary to Salvation? I am fure, our Church, in her Catechifm, has declared thefe Sacraments to be generally neceffary, and I have fhewed already (under what I have faid concerning the Epifcopal Commission) that it is neceffary that these Sacraments be miniftred by one Epifcopally ordained. The Neceffity therefore of a Sacerdotal Abfolution, or Remiffion of Sins, by the Ministry of the Prieft, in the giving the Holy Sacraments to fuch as are duly prepared for them, is most certainly agreeable to the Holy Scriptures, and the Doctrine of the Church of England; and therefore cannot, by fuch as duly confider the Matter, be charged upon any that teach it, as a Popish Doctrine. And for the Doctrine of Publick Penance, and Abfolution after it, I have no where preffed it as abfolutely neceffary, but have only fpoke of it as an wholfome, godly Difcipline, which ought to be regarded, and which our Church, upon every firft Day of Lent, in her Office of Commination, declares it her Defire to have restored. And for private Confeffion and Abfolution, I have never faid more of it, than our Church has done in the Exhortation to the Holy Communion, and the Office of Vifiting the Sick; in the latter of which She directs, That the Sick Perfon be moved

to make a fpecial Confeffion of his Sins, if be feel his Confcience troubled with any weighty Matter. After which Confeffion, the Priest ball abfolve him (if he humbly and beartily defire it) after this Sort: Our Lord Jefus Chrift, who hath left Power to his Church to ABSOLVE ALL SINNERS, who truly repent and believe in Him, of his great Mercy forgive thee thine Offences; and by his Authority committed to me, 1 abfolve thee from all thy Sins, In the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost. Amen. Those therefore who charge me with Popery for this Doctrine, muft charge the Holy Scriptures, and the Church of England alfo with Popery, together with all the Clergy of this Land, who have fubfcribed to the Doctrine of the Holy Scriptures, and to the Liturgy of the Church of England: But as to the real Popish Doctrine of Pardons and Indulgences to be purchased for Money, I have before declared my Abhorrence of them.

5. THE Unction of the Sick is a Do&trine which I have never publickly preached or printed; yet, fince it has been mentioned with Approbation by fome whom I esteem my Friends, I think it proper to take Notice of it here, and to fhew, that it is no Popish Doctrine. It is founded on

* Fam. v. an exprefs Text of Scripture, Is any fick 14, 15. among you among you? Let him call for the Elders of the Church; and let them pray over him, ANOINTING HIM WITH OIL IN THE NAME OF THE LORD: And the Prayer of Faith fhall fave the Sick, and the LORD Shall raise him up; and if he have committed Sins, they fhall be forgiven him. Agreeable therefore to this Command, in the first Liturgy of King Edward VI. it was ordained, that If the fick Perfon defire to be anointed, then fhall the Priest anoint him upon the Forehead or Breaft only, making the Sign of the Cross, faying thus: As with this vifible Oil thy Body outwardly is anointed; fo our Heavenly Father Almighty GOD grant, of His Infinite Goodness, that thy Soul inwardly may be anointed with the Holy Ghoft, who is the Spirit of all Strength, Comfort, Relief, and Gladness: And vouchfafe, for His great Mercy, (if it be His Blef fed Will) to restore unto thee thy Bodily Health and Strength to ferve Him And fend thee Releafe of all thy Pains, Troubles, and Difeafes, both in Body and Mind: And how foever His Goodness (by His Divine and Unfearchable Providence) fball difpofe of thee; we His unworthy Minifters and Servants humbly befeech the Eternal Majefty to do with thee according to the Multitude of His innumerable Mercies, and to pardon

thee all thy Sins and Offences committed by all thy Bodily Senfes, Paffions, and Carnal Affections: Who also vouchsafe mercifully to grant unto thee Ghoftly Strength, by His Holy Spirit, to withstand and overcome all Temptations and Affaults of thine Adverfary, that in no wife he prevail against thee; but that thou may't have perfect Victory and Triumph against the Devil, Sin, and Death, through Christ our Lord: Who, by His Death, hath overcome the Prince of Death, and with the FATHER, and the Holy Ghost, evermore liveth and reigneth GOD, World without End. Amen. The Anointing here appointed, is very far from the Extreme Unction ufed in the Church of Rome. The Papifts use it as a Viaticum or Sacrament, proper and neceffary for those that are past all Hopes of Recovery; but our Reformers directed, that it should be used as the Apoftle appointed, as it was used in the Primitive Church, and as it is still used in the Greek Church, and in all other Churches that were never fubject to the Roman, for the Recovery of the Sick, and therefore appointed the Oil to be miniftred, whenever the fick Perfon fhould defire it; but it is never used by the Romanifts till the fick Perfon is past being able to express his Defire of it. And though our Church did lay the Use of it aside in G
