Byzantine Authors: Literary Activities and Preoccupations : Text and Translations Dedicated to the Memory of Nicolas OikonomidesAnnotation The eight translations of this collection include military orations by the Emperor Constantine VII, some miracles of St. Menas, a 12th-century version of Helena's discovery of the Cross, a manual on siege defense (this is a reprint from a 1947 translation published by Brill), the earthy letters of an 11th-century monk, and two teaching texts from the 12th- century . For each translation the contributor provides an introductory and concluding analysis. In most cases, the translations are presented with both the Greek original and English translation (some lack the Greek). Nesbitt is a specialist in seals at Dumbarton Oaks, in Washington, DC, where Oikonomides, now deceased, was a research scholar. Annotation (c)2003 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com). |
