It cannot be necessary to say much by way of introduction to a Volume of Sermons, neither arranged in any connected series, nor confined to any single subject. But it may be thought, perhaps, that something should be said by way of apology. Upon this point, however, the author will content himself with little more than one short remark. If the volume, which he has ventured, not without much consideration, to publish, be really calculated to gain attention and to do good, it will of course form its own best apology; and, should it not be so calculated, nothing, which he can plead in its behalf, will, or indeed ought to preserve it from oblivion and neglect.
Perhaps the only strong ground which can be taken, in most cases, for the publication of New Volumes of Sermons, is the following:
