BULLETIN OF THE NEW YORK PUBLIC LIBRARY ASTOR, LENOX AND TILDEN FOUNDATIONS VOLUME 23 FEBRUARY 1919 NUMBER 2 NEWS OF THE MONTH GIFTS DURING the month of January, 1919, the Library received as gifts a total of 1,412 volumes, 5,922 pamphlets, 212 maps and 1,959 prints. Some of the more important and interesting of these gifts were the following: From Mr. W. E. Benjamin of New York came a collection of 1,931 portrait prints. M. André Messager (in addition to his recent gift of "Véronique") has presented to the Library the complete scores of his operas "Fortunio" and "La Basoche." Col. Robert C. Richardson, jr., of the General Staff, American Expeditionary Forces, sent to the Library a "Combined Order of Battle Map, showing the position of all the divisions on the Western Front, both Allied and enemy, as of 11 hours, November 11, 1918, Carte de France scale 1/600,000." From Commander F. W. Belt, R.N.V.R., of the British Bureau of Information, New York, came the "World Naval Operations (3 parts), Map of British Naval Operations," prepared by him for the Hydrographic Department of the Admiralty, May 3, 1918. From the French "Commissariat Général à l'Information et à la Propagande, Section des États-Unis," came a set of French posters issued by banks deputed to collect subscriptions for the 4th French Loan, 1918, and other French war posters (50 in all). Mr. John McE. Bowman, of the Biltmore Hotel, gave a collection of menus selected from a great number gathered from all parts of the United States, Canada, and Europe during the war and exhibited at the National Exposition of the Hotel Men, in Madison Square Garden, Dec. 16 to 21, 1918; also Food Administration printed material, 1,000 pieces in all. From the Estate of Andrew H. Green came 38 volumes and 7 pamphle mainly municipal documents of New York City, from 1858 to 1879. M G. A. Meyer of New York gave a collection of books, albums and mus comprising 69 volumes and 57 pamphlets, which included "La Sainte Bib Dessins de Gustave Doré," Darley's "Cooper Vignettes," "Sketches by B with illustrations by George Cruikshank," 10 volumes of "Bentley's Misce lany" (1838-1842), and 6 volumes of the "Cornhill Magazine" (1860-1862) From Mr. Charles Howland Russell came a miscellaneous collection of books pamphlets and periodicals, including 118 volumes, 225 pamphlets. Among the gifts of books received from the authors of the works were the following: From Mr. Thomas Willing Balch of Philadelphia, "The Question of Alsace and Lorraine," 1918; from Sr. Enrique Garcia de Herreros of Madrid, Spain, a copy of "Les Tribunaux Mixtes d'Égypte"; from Hoo Chi-Tsai, Docteur en Droit, Chinese Legation, Paris, the work "Les Bases Conventionnelles des Relations Modernes entre la Chine et la Russie," Paris, 1918; and from Mr. Charles Erskine Scott Wood, of Portland, Oregon, a copy of "Maia, a sonnet sequence" (Limited edition printed for the Author), Portland, 1918.
