TH

MUSIC DIVISION

'HE People's Music League of the People's Institute is giving an important series of fifteen folk-music concerts under the direction of Max Merz. These concerts which are called "Six Centuries of Folk Songs of Europe and North America," are being given at Cooper Union on Tuesday evenings, from Jan. 21 to April 29, and engage the services of solo singers and chorus. The material for these programmes has been collated from the folk-song collection of the Music Division and a bibliography of the available volumes is printed on each week's programme. For instance, one of the recent programmes includes a brief bibliography, with this prefatory note:

Those interested in the systematic study of folkpoesy, both in word and tone, will find a wealth of available material in The New York Public Library, at Forty-second Street. It would be manifestly impossible to include a detailed list of these publications within the limited space of these programme books, but all desired information in regard to popular and scientific works on this subject may be obtained from the card index at the Library.

Thirty new volumes of folk-song were acquired by the Music Division to assist in this undertaking, the collection comprising in all about 500 bound volumes.

Some of the more important and interesting of these gifts were the following: Mr. Thomas Fletcher McGrew and his wife, Clara Baldwin McGrew, of Scranton, Pa., have presented to the Library their important and valuable collection of books on poultry and poultry raising, including some works about other birds and about bee culture. This collection consists of 333 volumes and 35 pamphlets.

Phelps Stokes, volume three of his work "The Iconography of Manhattan Island, 1498-1909...," 1918 (one of 42 copies printed on Japanese vellum); and from Mr. Brooks Adams, of Boston, copies of two privately printed works by Henry Adams, - “A letter to American teachers of history," 1910, and a book on Tahiti, 1901.

Mrs. Edward McClure Peters, of Brooklyn, gave the Library a collection of diaries, correspondence, account books, etc., of her father, Henry Hunter Peters, of Massachusetts. This collection consists of 41 manuscript volumes and other material, and includes diaries of four trips between New York and San Francisco, via the Isthmus of Panama, and journeys to Sacramento, to Oregon and elsewhere, 1850-1854; also a diary kept at his farm in Southboro, Mass., 1855; a diary of A. C. Leonard, of Astoria, Oregon, 1850-1851, with a vocabulary of an Indian language; and account books and correspondence relating to business affairs in California, 1852-1856.

From Mr. D. Williams, of New York, came a collection of books, periodicals, etc., mainly relating to the theatre and numbering 126 volumes, 11 pamphlets and 18 periodicals.

From Mr. W. E. Benjamin, of New York, in addition to his gift of the previous month, has come a collection of 1,430 prints. From Mr. Alexander Russell, of New York, we received 11 pieces of sheet music, being songs of his composition.
