MUSICAL FUND

HE Library has received from Dr. Charles B. Penrose, of Philadelphia, ten thousand dollars, in payment of the legacy given by the will of his wife, Katharine Drexel Penrose. This amount has been credited to a fund to be known as "The Joseph W. Drexel Musical Library Fund." The terms of the legacy are as follows:

I give and bequeath to the New York Public Library, whose library building is now located at 42nd Street and Fifth Avenue, in the City of New York, the sum of Ten thousand ($10,000) dollars, the income to be used to add to the collection known as "The Joseph W. Drexel Musical Library" by the acquisition of books and musical compositions which shall be of the same general character as those now constituting the Library and which shall have been originally published since the year 1888.

NEWS OF THE MONTH

GIFTS

URING the month of December, 1918, the Library received as gifts a

total of 2,124 volumes, 13,683 pamphlets, 21 maps and 195 prints. Some of the more important and interesting of these gifts were the following: From Mr. Samuel Colman of New York came 171 Japanese prints. These include some work by earlier men such as Moronobu, Shinko, Korin, etc., as well as 130 pieces by Hokusai. Many of these prints came from albums; there are also some surimonos. This collection will be exhibited later in the season.

The League to Enforce Peace sent 250 copies of each of their recent publications, in all 250 volumes, 5,015 pamphlets and 250 cards. Mr. J. P. Morgan presented a copy of the "Gospels of Matilda, Countess of Tuscany, 1055-1115," nineteen plates in gold and color and twelve in monochrome, from the manuscript in the library of J. Pierpont Morgan, with introduction by Sir George Harner (privately printed for presentation to the Roxburghe Club, 1917). From Mrs. Charles Howland Russell came 88 copies of "The Crimes of Germany," American Defense Society, 1918; and 34 copies of "Awake, America! Object Lessons and Warnings," by William T. Hornaday, New York, 1918. From Mr. Henry Yates Thompson of London came an autographed copy (No. 52) of "Illustrations from 100 manuscripts in the

library of Henry Yates Thompson"; the 7th and last volume, with plates from the remaining 22 MSS., London, 1918. Mr. J. Thomson Willing gave the Library a collection of material bound in book form, showing the work of the United War Work Campaign, November 11-18, 1918.

From Mr. McDougall Hawkes came a collection of prints by American, Italian, Dutch and German artists; from Mr. Charles M. Johnson, a proof of his wood-engraving of President Wilson; from Mr. Louis Maurer, a copy of his lithograph, "Preparing for market"; and from Miss Emily R. Nicoll, two copies of an etching by J. C. Nicoll — “In Chesapeake Bay."

Gifts of music were received as follows: From Mr. Charles T. Griffes, copies of six of his compositions; from Mr. William Kahn, a collection of 252 songs and 10 songs in manuscript, all by American composers; and from Mr. Frank La Forge, 26 of his songs.

Mr. A. F. M. Lange of New York gave the Library a copy of the “Architectural works and designs of A. F. M. Lange," 1915; Mr. Edwin P. Kilroe of New York, a set of campaign literature issued in the city of New York by the various political parties during the campaign of 1918; Mlle. J. Villeneuve of New York, a collection of 82 pamphlets and 100 periodicals, comprising French newspapers, magazines, and publications regarding the war; and Mr. Nicholas Vasilieff of New York, a collection of pamphlets in Russian, 30 in number, mainly about the revolution in Russia in the year 1917.

ADDITIONS AND USE OF THE LIBRARY IN DECEMBER, 1918

DURING the month of December, 1918, there were received at the Library

18,203 volumes and 14,257 pamphlets. (These figures include the additions to both Reference and Circulation Departments.) The total number of readers recorded in the Central Building was 70,334. They consulted 178,116 volumes. Visitors to the building numbered 204,497.
