The Salt Ranges have been known and worked for hundreds of years. Alexander the Great noticed these Salt'Ranges in 327 B.C. The salt I mines of Punjab were also mentionedinthememoirs of Akbar the Great, Moghal Emperor (1542-1605). A Mr. Elphinstone visited Punjab in 1809 and saw lanes paved with saltandhouseswith salt windows.  is carried on at the following three mines in the is carried on at the following three mines in the Salt Ranges:  1. Khewra Salt Mine  2. Warcha Salt Mine  3. Kalabagh Salt Mlne  The Khewra Salt Mine is situated in the Pind Dadan Khan subdivision of the Jhelum district, about five miles north of Pind Dadan Khan town and the Jhelum River. It is the oldest and largest producer of rock salt in Pakistan. The Khewra area is an irregular dome in which the Khewra Kas (stream) has exposed the following stratigraphic sequence. P.347
