Entered according to act of Congress, in the year 1847, by JOSEPH GRIFFIN, in the District Clerk's office of the District Court of Maine.

"The pious and philanthropic Douglas, of Scotland, in a late work, expresses it as his opinion, that EUCLID'S ELEMENTS, and PALEY'S EVIDENCES, are the only two treatises which are perfectly adapted to the business of elementary instruction. This opinion, from a mind so comprehensive and so highly gifted as that of the gentleman above mentioned, cannot but recommend this work to the careful perusal of all such persons as wish for full information and complete satisfaction on this momentous subject. "-Dr. Alexander, Princeton, N. J.

We have made an effort to present to the public a correct edition of this valuable work, in a large type, suited to the eye of the student. The text has been carefully compared with one of the best copies of Paley's Works extant, published at Boston in 1810. The introduction, in many cases, of brief and more definite captions to the chapters, and also of 'running titles' at the top of the pages, will be found, we trust, an additional convenience to the reader.
