AN ELEGY FOR TAUFIQ RAFAT
By: Raja Changez Sultan
A misfit, sufi, saint or hermit,
A recluse of sorts in another order;
What our minds could never permit
You were always bound
By just one border -
So love can flow and fill your heart
Like the Ravi that enriches your land
Lending its waters to play its part
So others may learn
And understand
What matters most is not possession
But matter that must reside within
Leaving one with just one obsession
That wisdom be wrapped
In naked skin
And you could’ve been much more
Had you chosen a worldly guise
And flown away to another shore
Instead of heeding
Our cries
But your eyes spoke only of compassion
Knowing no other ways of being
Unlike those who, by sheer force or fashion,
Never could learn
Even by seeing -
A misfit, sufi, saint or hermit,
A recluse of sorts in another order;
What our minds could never permit
You were always bound by
Just one border!
