Private enterprises in rural China:

This book analyzes how the private enterprises have gradually gained momentum and are now a cornerstone in China's rural transformation. Private rural enterprises have in just 6 years engaged a labour force of 47 million people. These private enterprises now stand for more than one fifth of the total rural output value. The book not only draws upon the literature available on this development, but presents thorough field study results on how these household-based enterprises affect local community development. Of particular interest will be the economic impact on local resource mobilization to agriculture and the socio-political impact on polarization, formation of new interest groups, and control of local institutions.
